Live from Ukraine: Highlights of the Ancient City of Kyiv

Friday 15th September 11.00AM BST

INTRODUCTION

In our series of online webinars, we visit artists, art historians and guides in cultural cities around the world and enjoy an hour’s guided tour, museum visit or demonstration. The visits are live and interactive, allowing you to ask questions. These webinars will enable you to gain special access to sites, studios and galleries whilst at the same time providing an opportunity to travel virtually from home, no matter your location.

Join our new colleague Olga for a special online presentation, broadcast live from her home in her native city of Kyiv (using pre-recorded videos).

SUMMARY

During this tragic period  of war and destruction, we take time to learn about the history of Ukraine and celebrate its beauty and cultural heritage in the company of Olga, a highly experienced Kyiv guide and interpreter who will share her great knowledge and love of her city with you, answering your questions as we go.

Olga writes – “On this fascinating walking tour, you will discover the unique landmarks of one of the oldest cities on earth. Together we’ll travel back in time  – you will learn about the Golden Gates which served as a triumphal entrance through the ancient city fortifications. I will take you inside St. Sophia’s Cathedral where you will marvel at this magnificent Kievan Rus temple, built in the 11th century by Byzantine masters. I will tell you about Ukrainian Cossacks and show you St. Andrew’s Church, a well-known Baroque masterpiece. You will learn why this church is called silent and why it was built with no bells. And there is no street in Kyiv more mysterious than Landscape Alley – it’s quite steep and cobbled so wear good shoes … (your slippers will do!).”

The tour will be a live broadcast from Olga’s home using a combination of pre-recorded video tours and footage, photographs and live commentary. The tour is interactive, so you will be able to put questions to our guide throughout the event.

All bookings will also include a donation to two charities suggested by our guide, supporting victims of the war in Ukraine.

Please note that the broadcast will take place if conditions at the time allow and if it is safe for our guide to join us. If the event cannot take place you will of course receive a refund.
