Cultural Travels from Home: A Walking Tour of Vermeer’s Delft
Tuesday 13th February 11.00AM GMTINTRODUCTION
In our series of online webinars, we visit artists, art historians and guides in cultural cities around the world and enjoy an hour’s guided tour, museum visit or demonstration. The visits are live and interactive, allowing you to ask questions. These webinars will enable you to gain special access to sites, studios and galleries whilst at the same time providing a wonderful opportunity to travel virtually from home, no matter your location.
Today we enjoy a live guided tour through the streets of Delft and walk in Vermeer’s footsteps, visiting many of the sites associated with the master of Dutch Golden Age painting.
SUMMARY
Delft, a city of beautiful canals and courtyards, is located along the River Schie between Rotterdam and The Hague. It is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of Johannes Vermeer, who spent his entire life in the city. Our guide Stephan, who was born in Delft, will take us around some of the sites associated with Vermeer, showing us the location of The Little Street (a painting now in the Rijksmuseum. pictured above); the guild house where he mixed with other artists and artisans (now the Vermeer Centre), as well as the Oude Kerk, where the artist and several family members are buried.
Delft is also very much associated with the colour blue, thanks not only to its connections with Vermeer but also the famous blue earthenware that has been produced here since the 17th century. We will discover how several major disasters changed the shape of the city, and how it came to be connected to the House of Orange-Nassau. We will also hear about the murderous event that occurred in the Prinsenhof in 1584. Delft is also considered the birthplace of microbiology as a scientific discipline. So join us and let’s explore Delft, the city of science and art, together.
The tour is interactive, so you will be able to put questions to Stephan throughout the visit. Our events use the most up-to-date technology to provide you with the best possible virtual experience.
