In-Person Tour: The Wallace Collection, London

Thursday 12th December 10.30AM GMT

The Wallace Collection is without doubt one of the finest museums in Britain, comprising extraordinary examples of paintings, furniture, armour and objets d’art which are displayed in an elegant townhouse, bequeathed to the nation by Sir Richard Wallace in 1897. The Great Gallery, described as “the greatest picture gallery in Europe” by the late art historian and broadcaster Kenneth Clark, was created by Richard Wallace as a place in which to display some of his most precious Old Master paintings, and major alterations at Hertford House were undertaken in order to build it. Our guided tour focuses in particular on masterpieces found in this recently refurbished space, including van Dyck’s Portraits of Philippe Le Roy and Marie de Raet, Titian’s Perseus and Andromeda, Rubens’ Rainbow Landscape and Rembrandt’s Portraits of Jean Pellicorne with his Son Caspar and Susanna van Collen with her daughter Anna.

The day will begin with refreshments in the Gallery’s elegant courtyard restaurant, followed by a guided tour led by Art History in Focus Director Siân Walters.

This is an in-person event and places will be limited to 25 people. Everyone is most welcome to join, although Friends of Art History in Focus have priority booking.

10.30 – 11.15 Refreshments (included) will be served in the museum’s courtyard restaurant.

11.15 – 12.45 Guided tour of the collection.

12.45 Event ends.

You may wish to stay on and explore independently or have lunch in the courtyard restaurant after the tour – we would recommend booking in advance.
