Join Art History in Focus director Siân Walters for an evening lecture in which we investigate how the Black Death, which swept across Europe from 1347, impacted the production and patronage of art.
The Black Death was the most devastating epidemic in history. Emerging first in Asia, the plague spread to Europe in the autumn of 1347 from ships sailing from the East, landing first in Italy and bringing a disease that would rapidly decimate what has been estimated as a third but possibly as much as half of Europe’s population. Without the benefit of modern medicine there was little anyone could do effectively to stop the tidal wave of devastation.
Seen as a punishment from God, this devastating global epidemic led to a proliferation of images dedicated to intercessory saints such as St Sebastian, traditionally invoked against the plague, and increasing numbers of artworks or monuments designed to attain salvation after death. This lecture investigates how the Black Death impacted the production and patronage of art, revealing a surprising number of parallels with our own experiences over the past few years.
