An Exhibition Insight: “Women Artists in Britain 1620-1920” at Tate Britain

Thursday 30th May 6.00PM BST

INTRODUCTION

An exhibition at Tate Britain this summer follows women on their journeys to becoming professional artists. From Tudor times to the First World War, artists such as Mary Beale, Angelica Kauffman, Elizabeth Butler and Laura Knight paved a new artistic path for generations of women. Displaying over 150 works, the exhibition sheds light on how these artists challenged what it meant to be a working woman of the time by going against society’s expectations, having commercial careers as artists and taking part in public exhibitions.

This evening we are delighted to welcome exhibition researcher Dr Amy Lim, who will give an overview of the exhibition with installation photos, and explore the stories of some of the featured artists.

Dr Amy Lim is curator of the Faringdon Collection at Buscot Park, and a freelance art historian, curator and lecturer. She was a researcher and catalogue contributor for the Tate Britain exhibitions British Baroque (2020) and Now You See Us: Women Artists in Britain 1520-1920 (2024).
