Cultural Travels from Home: Venice by Boat – A Cruise along the Grand Canal

Tuesday 30th May 6.00PM BST

INTRODUCTION

In our series of online webinars, we visit artists, art historians and guides in cultural cities around the world and enjoy an hour’s guided tour, museum visit or demonstration. The visits are live and interactive, allowing you to ask questions. These webinars will enable you to gain special access to sites, studios and galleries whilst at the same time providing a wonderful opportunity to travel virtually from home, no matter your location.

Today we enjoy a leisurely cruise along the Grand Canal in Venice in the company of Dr Luisella Romeo, one of the city’s most authoritative and popular guides. The tour will be broadcast from a private boat and at twilight, one of the most evocative times of the day.

We will start from the upper stretch of the Grand Canal near the train station, passing the churches of San Simeone Piccolo and San Stae, the Bevilacqua textile factory, and the Fondaco dei Turchi, a good example of the indigenous Venetian casa fondaco, in other words a building with a dual commercial/residential function. We will admire the facades of many splendid palaces, from the Ca’ Pesaro to the Ca’ d’Oro, famous for its intricate Gothic tracery and now the home of the Galleria Giorgio Franchetti. After sailing under the Rialto, Venice’s most famous bridge, we will pass the university and the magnificent façade of the Ca’ Rezzonico, whose many illustrious owners included Giambattista Rezzonico, brother of Pope Clement XIII, and Robert Browning.  After passing under the Accademia Bridge we’ll sail towards Baldessare Longhena’s iconic Santa Maria della Salute and finally into the San Marco basin, where we can admire the Doge’s Palace and domes of the Basilica di San Marco as the light gently starts to fade .

This will be a beautiful, unique and very relaxing way to enjoy the city from home!

The tour is interactive, so you will be able to put questions to our guide throughout the visit.
