Friends’ Lecture: Behind the Scenes in Conservation at the National Gallery

Thursday 12th September 5.00PM BST

INTRODUCTION

In the year that the National Gallery in London celebrates its bicentenary, we are delighted to welcome Gallery conservator Kristina Mandy, who will take us behind the scenes and discuss a number of recent projects. After a general overview of the restoration process and an introduction to art conservation, Kristina will focus on the recent treatment and technical analysis of paintings by Orazio Gentileschi and the workshop of Sandro Botticelli. She will also discuss her recent treatment of the oldest painting in the collection, Margarito d’Arezzo’s The Virgin and Child Enthroned with Narrative Scenes. This important work has shed new light on the fascinating complexities and intricate details of this exquisite piece.

The online talk is a complimentary event for Friends of Art History in Focus only. Click here if you would like to join Friends of Art History in Focus and attend this event.

Kristina Mandy received her postgraduate diploma in Easel Paintings Conservation from the Courtauld Institute of Art in 2013. After work experience in Cambridge and Liverpool, she started working for the National Gallery as the Patrick Lindsay Conservation Fellow in 2016, then joined the Conservation Department fully in 2017. Since then, Kristina has been working on old master paintings in the collection by artists including Margarito d’Arezzo, Ludovico Carracci, Guido Reni, Orazio Gentileschi and Adolphe Monticelli.
